What is bad breath?

Most people will find they have bad breath at some time. It is a consolation that it is not unusual, but you would probably prefer to avoid it.

Bad breath is an unpleasant smell from the mouth. You may often have bad breath in the morning, but in that case you will find that the unpleasant smell disappears when you have eaten breakfast or cleaned your teeth. Bad breath makes itself felt by a smell from your mouth, but it can also mean an unpleasant taste in the mouth.

What are the causes of bad breath?

There can be several reasons why your breath smells. The most frequent cause is poor oral hygiene, so let us look more closely at that. Other causes of bad breath might be:

  • Gingivitis
  • Infection in connection with the eruption of wisdom teeth
  • Dry mouth (often the result of taking medication)
  • Disease (diabetes, kidney disease, eating disorders)
  • Polyps or chronic infection in the nose
  • Food or stimulants
  • Medication

Get rid of bad breath: 7 steps

In 90% of cases, bad breath originates from the mouth, where bacteria break down food residues and form sulphur compounds. It is the sulphur compounds that lead to bad breath. If you suspect that your bad breath does not originate in your mouth, we suggest that you visit your GP.

1) Brush your teeth thoroughly

To reduce the amount of unpleasant odour from sulphuric acid in your mouth, you should brush your teeth morning and evening. Use our toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil, which is anti-inflammatory.

Make sure all surfaces of the teeth are brushed, but do not press too hard, as it may damage the surfaces of the teeth and harm the gums.

Your gums should preferably be firm and pale pink. If they are swollen and red, this may be a sign of inflammation, which causes bad breath, and is painful as well.

2) Use a mouthwash to prevent bad breath

After you have brushed your teeth, you can finish off by using our mouthwash with Tea Tree Oil, which leaves your mouth fresh and free from unpleasant smells. Mouthwash ensures that you do not have a bad taste or smell coming from your mouth.

What is Tea Tree Oil?

It is not easy to determine when the properties of Australian Tea Tree Oil were first discovered. It is a fact, however, that its antibacterial properties have been used for many years.

First the leaves were used in their raw form, and then the oil was extracted from the tree. Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, which grows in humid subtropical areas of Australia.

Tea Tree Oil is used for inflammation, stinging, itching, fungi, acne, and on the hair. Now you can also get this fantastic product in your toothpaste and mouthwash for bad breath.

3) Clean your tongue thoroughly

When it comes to oral hygiene, many people forget the tongue. You may have cleaned your teeth, but often there are also bacteria on your tongue, so give it some attention before you finish off with mouthwash.

You can with advantage put a little extra toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil on your toothbrush when you brush your tongue clean. If you need more help, you can use a tongue scraper

4) Remember the spaces in between

Your toothbrush cannot do the job alone. Between your teeth and in the gingival pockets there may be remnants of food, which form small luxury residences for bacteria. Be conscientious about flossing, and if necessary, use a solo brush that goes in where an ordinary toothbrush cannot reach.

5) Drink plenty of water

We cannot survive without water, so we can naturally be confident that water is good for us. This is true, but in fact water is also very useful in combating bad breath.

It helps to keep your mouth moist, and it washes some of the bacteria and remnants of food out of your oral cavity.

Get used to carrying a bottle of water in your bag, so you can rinse your mouth during the day.

6) Avoid smoking, coffee and spicy food

If you have serious problems with bad breath, you can adjust your eating habits. Strongly flavoured food can cause bad breath. The same applies to coffee and cigarettes. If you cannot give these things up, you can try cutting down on them for a while, to see whether they are the cause of your bad breath.

If there is an improvement, then you can consider changing your habits.

7) Be aware of your saliva circulation

A dry mouth provides good conditions for bacterial growth. Saliva protects the mucous membranes in the mouth from infection and the teeth from caries. It also inhibits the growth of microorganisms and kills bacteria.

There are several things you can do to maintain production of spit. Drink plenty of water, use sugar-free chewing gum, or use other remedies that can help you. Pastilles or our mouthwash with Tea Tree Oil can help to keep up the circulation of saliva.

It all starts with your toothbrush

Good oral hygiene and the battle against bad breath start with your toothbrush and toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil. Once you are good friends with your toothbrush and keep regular appointments, you will soon see an improvement in your oral hygiene.

Even gingivitis can be stopped by extra thorough tooth-brushing. Try making friends with dental floss, a solo brush and mouthwash as well. Then you have a reliable circle of good friends for life.

Combine good oral hygiene with a visit to the dentist

Even if you have got into good habits with a thorough daily focus on oral hygiene using products with Tea Tree Oil, you should visit your dentist when you are called in for your annual or half-yearly appointment.

It is a bit like having your car inspected to make sure everything is in order. We grow older, and so do our teeth. We have to take care of them, so they last all our lives, and at the same time it keeps bad breath away.
