So maybe you should think twice if you're walking around with a full beard, planning to grow one, or maybe kissing someone who has one.

One in two men have gut bacteria in their beards, according to a new study from Manchester Metropolitan University.

The study, carried out in collaboration with cosmetics company Fragrance Direct, tested men's beards and found that enterococci was a popular visitor to beards.

You might think that you're more likely to get bacteria in your beard if it's long. But that's not actually the case. Men with stubble also tested positive for enterococci, according to Men's Health.

What should you do to avoid bacteria in your beard?

First, start by washing your hands after going to the toilet - according to one study, 60 per cent of us don't do this.

Then......

Remember good hygiene and take good care of your beard.

Let your beard grow, but remember to wash it properly. Otherwise, you could be walking around with a germ bomb.

Hipster or not. Your beard needs care. It's especially important that you remember to treat well, and wash it properly.

If you shower every day or every other day, as you should, and you also wash your face and beard, you should be safe from carrying bacteria in your beard on a daily basis

Wash your beard EVERY day. Your beard is exposed to food and drink and the elements. Therefore, your beard needs to be washed more often than your hair and preferably with an antibacterial shampoo that fights bacteria. Then you should be safe from having bacteria in your beard on a daily basis.

We recommend: The hair clean shampoo from Australian Bodycare contains the natural antibacterial Tea Tree Oil. Here you get a shampoo that fights bacteria and cleans your beard so that it is always clean and nice to look at. In addition, the shampoo can of course also be used in the hair and thus you get a shampoo for hair washing, which at the same time is perfect for the beard. Find shampoo here.

Bonus tip:

If you have problems with pimples and impure skin at the edge or under the beard, we recommend that you use a skin tonic. Choose a skin tonic that is antibacterial and preferably with natural Tea Tree Oil, which counteracts the bacteria that cause pimples and impure skin.
