What are pimples in the neck?

Pimples are skin blemishes characterised by red swellings or yellowish pus. They are caused by an excess of sebum (skin fat) under the skin, produced by the sebaceous glands.

The purpose of sebum is to moisturise the skin and hair so that it does not dry out. If too much is produced, the gland becomes clogged because the sebum cannot reach the surface of the skin.

This blockage makes the gland vulnerable to impurities and bacteria that cause inflammation and turn into pimples.


Why do pimples show up at the hairline?

Pimples can appear anywhere on the body.

They are most common where the skin tends to be the most oily and where we have the most sebaceous glands and hair follicles, such as on the face.

Therefore, it is not uncommon to suffer from pimples on the back of the neck at the hairline.

Hormonal skin condition

Pimples are a hormonal skin condition. This means that a disturbance in the hormonal balance can cause spots.

Chemicals in your hairspray can contribute to an excess of oil and skin reactions that cause pimples.

Wearing make-up can also accumulate oils that are not natural to the body. Not washing foundation off your face before going to bed can clog pores and cause breakouts.
