Boils

Boils are tender, inflamed collections of pus and bacteria in the subcutaneous tissue. They can occur anywhere on the body and are most commonly caused by staphylococcal bacteria. Boils can vary from very small and harmless to large, inflamed abscesses that require medical attention. It can sometimes be difficult to recognise the difference between a pimple and a boil at first. Pimples are an inflammation of the epidermis, while boils are located in the subcutaneous tissue. That's why you can squeeze out pimples, but typically not boils.

Boils can be treated with antibiotics if they are particularly large and bad, but they usually resolve on their own. Always ask your doctor for advice. The best treatments are therefore preventative. Bacteria usually have a hard time penetrating the skin, especially if you have good hygiene.

You can use a good quality soap, such as our Body Wash or Face Wash with tea tree oil, which has an antibacterial effect. If you have a boil on your hands or feet, for example in the nail bed, you can soak it in warm, soapy water.
