Boils are accumulations of inflamed pus and bacteria in the skin. The difference between a pimple and a boil is that boils are infections in the subcutaneous tissue, while pimples are only in the epidermis. A new boil often looks like a pimple but cannot be squeezed out. The swelling and redness is caused by white blood cells rushing to the abscess to encapsulate the inflammation. Boils can go away on their own, but some require treatment - ask your doctor for advice on treatment.
